Jaguar Confirms Development of New Entry-Level Sedan and All-Wheel Drive XJ

Jaguar has admitted that it is currently working on a new sedan that will be the entry-level model of the range. Smaller than the XF, the new model is expected to have a starting price of around £28,000 (€31,850/$45,685). According to Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar's global brand director, the sub-£30,000 premium car market is four times larger than that of sedans priced above £30,000 (€34,120), so developing a cheaper, smaller Jaguar makes a solid business case.

Russian Customizer Turns a Jaguar into a GAZ-21 Lookalike

Previously on Carscoop, we’ve seen Pontiac Fieros turned into “Fierarris”, Toyota Soarers adorned with Mercedes-Benzes off cuts and some others too hideous to even mention. For the most part, it’s a case of turning a boring, mainstream car into something that resembles a high-priced exotic if you’re squinting through grease paper with the sun in your eyes and have lost a lot of blood.

What you rarely see is something exotic transformed into something that some people would call mundane. That’d just be silly. Never to be one to shy away from a challenge, the Russians have done just that: taken a Jag and turned it into a GAZ.

Originally this car was a 1993 Jaguar XJ40 with an automatic transmission and a 3.2 L V6. Its exterior has been adorned with the grille, head- and taillights, unique side vents and boot emblem from a ‘70s Volga. It’s not quite in the same league as the BMW 6-series derived Volga V8 Roadster or the Porsche Cayenne-based “Lenin-mobile”, but it’s still an impressive transformation.

Jaguar XJC Coupe Classic Seeks Hip Cat to Pose Alongside

Every car enthusiast has their obsessions. For some it's '50s Chevys or '30s Fords; for others it's Chargers or Beamers or just about anything else you can think of. For me, it's Jaguars. I don't know why exactly. Could it be because they're big, affordable British luxury cars with sporting pretensions? You know, Bentleys for the upper middle class.

And there's more. I don't think there's a Jaguar I don't like. I'm even a fan of the bloated, much maligned XJS of the '70s, '80s and even '90s. So surely I'd be interested in this black, mostly stock 1976 Jaguar XJC Coupe? Here's the thing:

Other than the colour, year and what we can derive of the car's condition from looking at the photos, there's really no information on this car. How many miles it's done, what modifications have been made etcetera. All things a potential buyer would want to know. And as a Jaguar aficionado, I know that '70s Jags are bad enough before you start tinkering with them.

Jaguar Recalling 6,475 XJ Sedans in the States Due to Faulty Windshield Wipers

When you're sitting behind the wheel of a new Jaguar XJ, it would appear that no rainy day could affect your mood. Well, except for those 6,475 U.S.-spec units manufactured between July 28, 2009 and November 3, 2010, on which the front wiper arms weren't sufficiently torqued during assembly. Consequently, Jaguar has issued a recall for the affected cars, according to a NHTSA press release.

Arden Takes On the New Jaguar XJ Saloon

The all-new Jaguar XJ is one of those cars you either love or hate. There is no middle ground with this strange mix of old and new, of traditionalism and modern manufacturing techniques. Now German tuners Arden, perhaps best known these days for tuning Jaguars, Minis and Land Rovers, have returned to their roots and taken the big cat for another turn around the workshop.

Jaguar XJ75 Platinum Sports Concept Celebrates [Again] firm's 75th Anniversary at Pebble Beach

It's become somewhat common knowledge at this point that Jaguar is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, but just in case the limited edition XKR175 Coupe doesn't spread the word at this weekend's Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance in California, Jaguar also readied the XJ75 Platinum concept.

Wald International Preparing Kits for New Porsche Panamera, BMW 7-Series, Rolls Royce Ghost, Infiniti M / Fuga and Jaguar XJ

Looks like 2010 will be a busy year for Wald International, the Japanese tuner known for its huge collection of aggressive body kits. Among other projects, Wald International is working on the development of exterior packages for five brand-new luxury sedan models, the 2011 BMW 7-Series, 2011 Infiniti M / Nissan Fuga (JDM), 2011 Jaguar XJ, Porsche Panamera and the new 'baby' Rolls Royce, the Ghost.

Despite the fact that the Japanese tuning firm has only released one teaser shot of each saloon, we can tell that the packages include new bumpers, spoilers, rocker panels, larger alloy wheels and suspension kits.

We'll bring you all the details on Wald International's new tuning proposals as soon the company launches the products.

2012 Jaguar XJR High-Performance Sports Saloon Rendered

We still don't know if Jaguar's future plans include the introduction of a high-performance 'R' model for its new XJ limousine, but the folks over at Autogespot took the liberty to create a speculative rendering that shows us what the XJR might look like. Evidently inspired from the 510HP Jaguar XFR, the artist gave the XJ a more aggressive look by redesigning the hood and front bumper, adding chunky alloy wheels and side air vents, reshaping the rear bumper and well, that's about it.

If Jaguar decides to add an XJR model to its range, we assume that it will most likely be fitted with an even more powerful version of the 2011 XJ Supersport's 5.0-liter supercharged V8 (same as in the XFR) that makes 510 ponies.

My Two Dents on the New Jaguar XJ (Plus Mega Gallery with 100 High-Res Photos)

2010 Jaguar XJThe XF, Jaguar's mid-sizer, was a... leap.... forward in design, luxury, and gimmicks when it debuted (no more J-gate shifter!). It not only made the S-Type look like a slob, but made people relegate the S to the "end of the bad days" section of history with Jag's unfortunate X-Type. The XJ, on the other hand, has been the picture of restrained aristocracy - as opposed to performance, value, or extravagance - in the luxury segment for quite some time, its lines slowly evolving but never really breaking the mold.

2010 Jaguar XJWell, all that has just changed, for better or for worse. Never the sales leader, the newest XJ is one of this year's debuts that needs to be super-dee-super (much like Saab's 9-5); looking at the photos, well, it is and it isn't.

The bottom line is this: the exterior comes off like a photoshopped XF. The front end takes the XF's face and makes it smoother and more elegant, which happens to be a big bonus. Also, it doesn't appear to slope back as much, creating a blunter, more aggressive demeanor when partnered with the mean - and better-executed than the XF - headlights. For anything else positive, other than the decent albeit "looks like SOMEONE used to work for Audi" roofline, you'll have to go inside; right now we're sticking to the exterior, where things go from good to bad in a real hurry.

T2010 Jaguar XJhe award for biggest "Just say NO" idea goes to the c-pillar. What were they thinking? Whether it's painted metal or just black composite, I guess the idea was to give the illusion of the rear windscreen wrap-around. If that was indeed the case, the chrome trim around the side windows quickly put a stop to that idea. Also, why would they want the rear windshield to appear wider than the panoramic roof? For the sake of appearing out of balance, obviously.

The rest of the rear three-quarter view seems rushed and stolen, with Audi A6 written all over it. The taillights look like a cross between those of the Lancia Thesis and the Maserati Quattroporte, while the trunk is just plain, bland, and boring. The leaper is ok, but a car as significant as this should say J-A-G-U-A-R across the back in tastefully-sized chrome letters, telling you what it is instead of giving Pictionary-esque hints.

2010 Jaguar XJThat said, the good stuff is on the inside. The interior is gorgeous, fresh, and everything the newest big Jag needs to be. The layered dashboard is different, while still keeping with Jaguar's traditional door-to-door wood paneling theme. Does the dash's wraparound wood remind me of a Buick Lacrosse? Sure, but it works (if Jaguar thinks Buick's design is good enough to adapt to its range-topper, what does that say about the new Lacrosse interior?).

The raised center vents are reminiscent of a Pagani, and the attention to detail regarding the trim is top-notch, even if some of the baubles are bound to cause future problems (is that ambient lighting in the vents?). Lastly, when 30 percent of the rear doors are covered with slabs of wood, you know the car is ritzy. While the exterior is meh, the interior is what convinces me that it's a Jag.

2010 Jaguar XJWe can all tell that the latest XJ is a 90-degree turn off the path its predecessors laid out for it, but is it enough? It will certainly grab attention for being the radical departure that it is, even if it inherited more than its share of flaws trying to be like the rest of the luxury gang; but will it be able to compete with the A-Team of big-lux sedans? For performance, quality, and the rest, we'll just have to wait for the reviews.

What we know is this: at $72,000 and change, the entry-level model with the 385HP 5.0-liter V8 seems to be priced just right; but a $15,000 hike for the 470HP supercharged V8 model? That seems like a bit of a gouge. And if you want the 510-horse "special order only" Supersport (it seems as if interior traits aren't the only item worth taking from GM) it'll take $112,000+ from you. For a supercharged V8 that's pushing it. It seems as if Jaguar still hasn't quite figured out its pricing and its targets just yet. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
